a letter to M

Dearest divine miss m,

You are six months old tomorrow. We will be at presbytery for this auspicious occasion, so I thought I'd write you a quick note today.

A snapshot:

Here are some things you do:
--roll over back to front and almost front to back
--sit unassisted for several minutes or more
--expel poop at an astonishing velocity
--rock on all fours with your butt in the air--can crawling be far behind?
--teethe with fierce determination
--wake up rarin' to go, as opposed to your sister who would nurse and doze in the morning
--bring toys from floor to hand to mouth and back again
--grab the kitties' hair, which then sticks to your warm clammy hand (great tool for shedding control)
--just last night you started with consonants: Ma Ma Ma!

You've had maybe four bites of oatmeal in the past week. We laid off it once you started waking at night in case it was upsetting your tummy. Sadly, you're still waking.

You love bathtime and kick with your huge tree-trunk thighs.

We got your picture taken on Friday with your sister. You wore matching blue smocked dresses. No sooner had we parked you in front of the camera but you toppled over and bonked your head. Result: no smiling pictures. But still you were adorable.

Six months ago today I was so ready to meet the kid who'd been teasing me with pre-labor for a couple of weeks already.

Six months from now I will be baking a cake.

Today you are closer to your birth than you are to your first birthday. Not so tomorrow. Tomorrow everything tilts toward the future.

We're glad that you're here.

Love,
your mother
