rapid monday dots of update

  • Remember last week when I asked "why have I been spared" the illnesses? I know the world doesn't work that way, but what was I thinking putting that in writing? [Cough, sniff]

  • The divine miss m is also sick--still, or again? R thinks it's again--she appears to have what I have, which is not the same as what she and R had. Apparently she doesn't let anyone get sick by themselves. Last night her fever spiked, but the snot runneth clear, and the eyes sparkle with the spirit of the Lord, so verily I tell thee, we shall avoideth the doctor's office as a den of germs.

  • Before she and I were both so stricken this weekend, we went (with R and a group from church) to view the St. John's Bible exhibition that's in town. The SJB is a work in progress, a hand-calligraphed edition of the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. It's a theological and artistic wonder, and I was thrilled to be able to see the exhibit in person (I have a print of the Genesis 1 illumination, and a bound copy of the Gospels/Acts.)

I had presented a video of the SJB to a Sunday School class a year ago, and they oohed and aahed over the commitment and care of the lead artist, the sumptuous illuminations, the sheer scope of the project--"it's on the order of a cathedral," said one of the brothers from St. John's. Toward the end of the video the cost of the project was mentioned--something on the order of $2 million.

And like a flash, the class did a complete 180.

    "What a waste."
"How many hungry people could be fed?"
    God bless those sensible Calvinists.

But as we filed out of the room at the end of the session, I wondered aloud, "Hmm... Isn't that exactly what Judas said?"

  • I've been re-reading my personal journals starting from 10 years ago. Wow did I have a lot of free time back then.

It's odd to review these books--about 12 in all, before I started journaling on the computer. The entries fit into various categories:
--entries about things I remember well
--entries about things I had forgotten until reading about them
--entries about things that were incredibly important at the time, but not only do I not remember them, I can't even piece them together to save my life. (*What* conversation with J? *What* disagreement with D?)

Many of these journals are filled with something like Julia Cameron's morning pages--that is to say, random stream of conscious junk. But the point of doing morning pages is to download the junk from the mind, and occasionally, a few good ideas emerge. Indeed I found a few things I'd like to explore further. Sometime, when M and I are not sick.

  • G-mommy has been here this weekend! Yay! Lukee comes tomorrow! Awesome! KDJJ on Wednesday! Yippee!
