The wisdom of the collective rests upon diversity. Not on diversity of race, color, religious belief or gender (the Bush group has those) but upon diversity of viewpoint, diversity of experience, diversity of perception (cognitive diversity) and personal autonomy (which the Bushies lack). The Wisdom of Crowds only works when there is freedom of thought and the means to express it.

Added comment: As I can tell you from experience, there can be a high economic and/or social price to pay for independence of thought and innovation in social behavior. The status quo is fiercely defended by those who have a stake in maintaining it and the fear reaction easily mutates into aggression. He who would march to a different drummer must dance to the tune of the piper occasionally. (How do you like them metaphors?)
