I firmly believe that what goes around, comes around and that in the long run, one way or another, things even out. We may think we get away with something; it certainly seems that others commit egregious crimes and come out unscathed, but I believe there is a balance in the Universe and eventually miscreants will pay and sufferers will find peace or some sort of solution. Maybe not in a week or a month or even a year, but in the long run, yes. Not, however, as one-to-one as might be believed/hoped/feared. People who commit crimes, lie, cheat, steal, all the old familiar sins, do not always get caught by the authorities and punished. Elected officials who are openly hypocritical and vicious get re-elected. But some time, somehow, wrongs are righted and honest people get a form of justice. When I was a child in parochial school, I fell on the playground and sliced my leg open. Bleeding copiously, I went to the infirmary. The nun who bandaged my would told me that God was punishing me for my sins. I cried all the way home, because I did not know what I could have done to warrant such a severe punishment. I know she said it to put the fear of God in me, and it's true I have never forgotten it, but I don't think the admonishment had its intended consequences.
