To prepare for dinner, I peeled and diced onions, standing at the kitchen counter. I scraped and sliced carrots, standing.... I peeled and quartered potatoes, standing.... I cut up the meat (for tonight's stew)[no tomatoes yet].... I folded laundry, standing, in the bedroom. And I'm here at the computer (seated at last!), wondering why on earth we women do so many of our tasks standing up when we could be sitting down. Because our mothers, our grandmothers, our great-grannies all stood in kitchens, bedrooms and sitting-rooms to do these same tasks. Why? It is a sign of subservience that the lesser persons doing the menial tasks (servants or clerks) stand in attendance, whilst the more powerful, superior person (husband or supervisor), sits. P. S. I stand corrected. Many tasks were done seated on benches or chairs (after their respective inventions). Good thing, too, because, while I'm not giving in to age, I am making certain graceful adjustments. Read/Post Comments (3) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
