2006-05-01 10:51 AM Los Angeles Boycott / Demonstration Day Previous Entry :: Next Entry Read/Post Comments (9) "Legal Rights for Illegal Immigrants" headlined for today. So far, the most obvious difference from a normal Monday is that the freeways are wide open (remember the '84 Olympics?) and the downtown closed intersections are clearly marked and the detour signs prominently posted.
The news stations are busily interviewing people about "what if" scenarios, because "what is" isn't, at least not yet. Noon rally at City Hall is scheduled, large crowd marching now. According to the school district information office, no high school walkouts have occurred (yet). Many businesses, such as coffee shops, dry cleaners and donut shops, are closed. Why? Perhaps because many of them hire minimum wage immigrant employees, perhaps because many people remember previous civil disturbances, perhaps as an excuse for a three-day weekend. In my office, it's business as usual. We here are a microcosm of greater Los Angeles--ethnicities and life styles and ages--and we're here, doing our jobs. The only difference is that each of us has an ear tuned to a quietly playing news radio station or tv news channel. Just in case. Read/Post Comments (9) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
