I went over to the desk to make an appointment and asked for a date in March, preferably the Ides of March. They had no idea what I was talking about. Not one of the three at the desk could even guess. It used to be that a person would recognize "Beware the Ides of March" even if they didn't know its source. Not these young women. Blank stares. So I briefly outlined Shakespeare's play, the oracle's warning, Cassius and Brutus' betrayal. Not even a flicker of recognition. Not until I mentioned Julius Caesar by name did I see a twinkle of ideation--"He was Greek, wasn't he?" What *do* they teach in school these days?
