After he admitted inappropriate sexual emails and IM with underage pages, Foley checked into rehab, claimed he had been molested by his priest as a youngster, and was announced as gay by his legal representation.

Once again, the damage is done: people will believe that gays are a danger to our youth; a threat to our children; their homophobia be reinforced.

I wonder did the Republican leadership, realizing that Foley was trashed no matter what the damage control, decide to use his fall from grace as a way to whip up fear of gays once again. They might as well make some use of him to their advantage, since he was all but done for, is how I think their strategizing went.

I don't think the idea is too far-fetched. Not from what I've read of the machinations of Cheney, Rumsfeld and Rove in the past recent and further back as well, since the halcyon (from their point of view) Reagan era.

Am I being too cynical?
