The Narcissistic Personality is a personality disorder characterised by the exhibition of 5 or more of the following traits:

The Narcissistic Personality Type:

(1) has a grandiose sense of self-importance (e.g., exaggerates achievements and talents, expects to be recognized as superior without commensurate achievements)
(2) is preoccupied with fantasies of unlimited success, power, brilliance, beauty, or ideal love
(3) believes that he or she is "special" and unique and can only be understood by, or should associate with, other special or high-status people (or institutions)
(4) requires excessive admiration
(5) has a sense of entitlement, i.e., unreasonable expectations of especially favorable treatment or automatic compliance with his or her expectations
(6) is interpersonally exploitative, i.e., takes advantage of others to achieve his or her own ends
(7) lacks empathy: is unwilling to recognize or identify with the feelings and needs of others

I was doing this research because of an interest on a person-to-person level, when it suddenly hit me in the face: There are major religions (and sub-religions) which fit the characteristics listed perfectly.

Let's start with a grandiose sense of self-importance. We have, they say, revealed to us, the Truth ,the only Truth, and the rest of you are beyond the pale if you do not see and accept this. (It's so hard to make these comments not specific).

Has a sense of entitlement: We, as members of this specific religion, are entitled to special treatment, perks, now and in the hereafter. You do not question the religious leader but obey immediately.

Not only shall our Supreme Being be bowed down to and revered but also all of our regional/tribal customs. We are to be admired and you will willingly accept your exploitation as our just due.

We envy your heathen riches, your godless goodies and we will destroy them.

Since you are not one of us, we care not a fig for your pain, your loss. You're not really human anyway, because you do not believe and worship the true revealer of whatever.

We are special, the chosen of ____ [fill in the blank].

And the lack of empathy in the treatment of women, the treatment of those who believe differently? We need not comment. We do not empathize with lesser beings and with the recipients of our magnificent sperm.

As I said, it is difficult for me not to use the specific phrases which would identify individual religions, but you get the idea. I think it could be argued that organized religions are founded upon, and continue to perpetrate, a mass narcissism. A group Personality Disorder.
