Elephants can recognize themselves in mirrors, according to a new study. Humans, great apes, and dolphins are the only other animals known to possess this form of self-awareness. All of these animals also lead socially complex lives and display empathy—concern and understanding of another's feelings—researchers report. The elephants were able to track their trunks' movements versus the movements shown in the mirror, and one elephant was observed touching the "x" made with tape on her forehead which had been placed where she could not see it directly, only in the mirror. Stories of elephants grieving for their dead and nurturing each others' babies have been in the news for years. I'm really wondering if humans belong in the same category. Not seeing much empathy these days, nor intelligence, come to think of it. Read/Post Comments (6) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
