It huffed and it puffed and it made it up to 16 degrees Celsius (I think that's 61 degrees Fahrenheit) today. Partly cloudy, with gargantuan fluffy cumulus clouds everywhere and brilliant sunshine in between. Perfect.
Our service today was the Bread Communion service. The table was spread in the center of the congregation seating, covered with a fair cloth and decorated with multi-hued cobs of corn, leaves, candles and graced with our napkin-lined baskets of bread. After the regular parts of the service, we said our thanks to Earth, Wind, Sun and Water, and those of us who had baked walked among the congregants with our baskets of bread and invited people to share. A year ago I hardly knew anybody; today, it was like coming home to family. Please don't let it be widely known to my friends and associates, but in spite of my decades of diatribes against the evils perpetrated by organized religions, I find that I've been a Unitarian all along. I just didn't know it. It's the closest thing to family; maybe closer. The only thing I miss from Episcopal services? The old familiar hymns. Every now and then we sing one of them and I get sniffly. "Come Ye Grateful People Come" and "All Good Gifts Around Us" are two from Thanksgiving/harvest time that I remember well. And, like a true family, it's not just Sundays that we get together. Monday is Worship Committee; Tuesday is the Book Club; Thursday is choir rehearsal and on Saturday we're going to the Getty Villa in Malibu. It's wonderful to find a home at last. One place where I can relax and be myself. Read/Post Comments (2) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
