"Cell Phones of the Stars: Which models do the celebs use?" queries the headline. We have reached the nadir of what, on the positive side, used to be called hero worship.

To my disgust, I found there is a person whose blog runs regular features on celebrities and their cell phones. It's almost as fascinating as tracking which handbag carried by which glam babe.

There's another site, if you like, called BlackBerrySightings.com. Celebs' choices of model are tracked and certain famous people are dinged for carrying out-of-date BlackBerrys. Tell me you really care.

The iPhone isn't popular with celebrities, which is almost a good enough reason for me to get one.

How did we come to sink so low, from hero worship to the cult of personality? Or was it ever thus (Homer's fascination with Achilles sulking in his tent comes to mind; as does the deification of rulers), and I just didn't notice.

I think I'm obsessing on the cult of personality because of the time of year. After December 25th, I'll get over it for another year.
