I've flown around the world a couple of times, but no matter how often I experience takeoffs, I still remain convinced, in my heart and gut, that anything that big *cannot possibly* get off the ground. I find my seat and sit down; surely I'll only be disembarking in a few minutes right at the same terminal I just left. But then those huge engines roar like ferocious beasts, the whole assemblage vibrates, the control surfaces move into place, the tarmac is flashing by, and soon enough we're airborne. Amazing.
