Jinnah, his opposite number, representing the Muslims, was a very westernized, urbane politician, who wanted to form a greater India, comprised of Muslims and Hindus and Jains and Christians and whatever, a secular state, looking to modernize and shake off the shackles of caste and custom. Jinnah believed strongly in gradual and peaceful change, in contrast with Gandhi's civil disobedience strategies His early call (in 1940) for the formation of a Muslim state was made deliberately, as a political maneuver, to balance off Gandhi's adamant position. When it was clear that Gandhi's position would marginalize Muslims, Jinnah then proposed the two nation solution. Sadly, the British backed Gandhi, bamboozled by his "holiness" and baffled by his psychological violence, and thus the travesty of Division -- and Pakistan was born. Division caused many many deaths and untold misery. The Indian subcontinent still reaps the bitter harvest. 1947 was a year that shall live in infamy.
