I wonder if retirees, especially those who have worked for 40 or 50 years, experience a form of culture shock when they retire.

It might explain why most spend the first 6 months in a state of anomie, drifting, at loose ends, divorced from the structures and norms of their previous existence. And why many get sick and die within a year.
