That's out of a total population of 312 million: approximately 1%. I wonder what percentage it would be of all working age adults? The next largest employer is also a military government employer, the Chinese People's Liberation Army--2.3 million (total population 1.3 billion). A far smaller percentage of the country's population than the DoD employs. Then there's the private sector: WalMart (2.1) and McDonald's (1.7). Non-union of course, but they treat their employees well and provide outstanding benefits and retirement, don't you know. Not to mention selling delicious good-for-you food. Guns and butter, they said when I was a child. That's what it's all about. Interesting note: the National Health Service (the article said England, but I think they may have meant UK) is the 7th largest employer globally.
