2011-12-29 8:47 AM Two Books Previous Entry :: Next Entry Read/Post Comments (7) I finished Frame-Up. It is the second book for this author; the word "sophmoric" applies. I cringed at the places where the story became so improbable as to be laughable. And where the novel dripped sentimentality (especially at the end), I found it nearly impossible to read.
I won't even do more than mention briefly the religious thread running through it, or the violently emotional reaction in an intelligent man on behalf of a woman he has met less than a handful of times. Characters acted out of character. Partners did not work in partnership. Perhaps the author was just in a hurry to finish the second half of the book. Another book comes to memory, because it is today's Kindle Daily Deal. The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood. I read it shortly after it was published. This is not one of those many books, once having been read, fades into obscurity, distant memory. This one I remembered--vividly--as soon as I saw it in the Daily Deal email. If you haven't read it, I highly recommend it. I would venture to guess that in the back of every woman's mind is the suspicion that if certain men had their way, this kind of society would come to pass. If you doubt the possibility, just look at Afghanistan and Saudi Arabia. It couldn't happen here. Or could it? Read/Post Comments (7) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
