Thinking of Our Public Workers
Previous Entry :: Next Entry

For an entire week, the daily temperatures have been over 100 degrees, most days nearly 110.

My heart goes out to the mail person who walks the block, sweating in his uniform, to bring mail to every house. And to the policeman I saw, in his heavy dark blue uniform, struggling in the blazing sunlight to assist a cyclist who had dropped his bike on Topanga Canyon Boulevard. To the firemen in their turnout coats, also, responding to an emergency at the apartment building on the corner.

My hat's off to the delivery people--UPS, FedEx, Farm Fresh to You (farmers' cooperative that delivers door to door) and all the others, out in this heat.

And of course to all the yard workers who work to keep yards and plantings neat and tidy and flourishing, rain or sun. Never, ever, call them lazy!

The young woman, sweat running down her face, who handed me my Pollo Loco chicken this afternoon is also a hero in my book.

All these people (and more) keep our world moving, cared for, fed, no matter the elements, however inclement the weather.

I am grateful to them.
