I like to browse Amazon books, looking for something interesting to catch my eye. Then I click on the author's page to find out more about him/her.

Why do so many writers live in North Carolina? As far as I can tell, the authors whose books I read have fairly liberal or moderately left of center viewpoints. Yet North Carolina is a red state, voting Republican overall.

Is there a particular portion of North Carolina where writers and intellectuals tend to congregate? This question has been a matter of curiosity for me for quite a while now. Seems like an anomaly.
