Obviously, I'm not a 50's housewife by nature (or nurture, for that matter). I don't look perfectly made up to welcome my hardworking husband home from the office; I don't have the house perfectly clean, rejoicing at the shine on my kitchen floor; I don't find that housework fulfils me as a human being, the more mindless, the better.
I'm a failure. A geek, an intellectual, a humanist--all anaethma to the current prevailing cultural climate. Eric's comment yesterday really hit home. In a society that served people instead of monetary interests, there would be no surplus people, no second class citizens, no trailer trash. People of color, women, senior citizens would be fully paticipatory, with equal rights and responsibilites; there would be no demonization of young black men, no discarding the old, no disregard for the poor and disabled. But I dream, and dreams are not reality. With the Senate set to become Republican majority in 2014, those dreams become more and more just fantasy.
