2007-06-10 12:05 PM My fellow students Previous Entry :: Next Entry Read/Post Comments (1) Well, Debby said she wanted to hear about the other students in massage school. Here it is:
L. is a woman from Lithuania. She understands English better than she speaks it, but after the first week of class is becoming overwhelmed. Medical terminology is all Latin- and Greek-derived, but that's not much help. She has three children, and is somewhat self-effacing. Pleasant. R. is young, but really pays attention. I would have pegged her for not so sharp, but she is. Thanks to R. for helping me to break down some of my assumptions. (And thanks for not freaking out when I was draping and touched her boob on accident. Yes, ON ACCIDENT. She was cool about it. It's funny how the body becomes amorphous under that sheet.) E. is a large black woman with an excellent sense of humor. She hangs with me, R., and D., who is Native American, I think. She says I can't transfer to afternoons because she needs my sense of humor. She also answers to roll call with "Hollah!" The four of us could become a force to be reckoned with. If it weren't for the hellish commute, I would stay in the evening class to hang with this group. El. owns two clothing consignment stores, and looks like a partier but isn't. Soft-spoken and alert. S. has a unique name which is her dad's name spelled backwards. J., a man interested in energy work, has that name. They bonded on day one, despite being of different races and at least 10 years apart in age. H. is about 19 and pregnant, 5 and a half months. You can hardly tell. T#1 (there are 2 Ts) is the size of a 12 year old and has a 6 month old daughter. These girls are cool, but too young to be moms! Just my opinion. T#2 wants to do equine massage someday. The law in WA says you have to be certified in people massage before you can practice on animals. T#2 is funny, laid back, and tired of working in medical records. L. is the woman I've written about before, who has real cognitive issues and probably shouldn't have been admitted. Now, realize that I am a special ed teacher (for two more weeks, at least), and I'm all for people working hard to achieve their dreams. Maybe this will work out. It's so hard to see the amount of work she needs to do just to keep up with lecture. J#2 is a nice guy, just got married, sick of retail, wants to start a family, and wants to work from home. Gentle. Decent. B. is a Cajun woman by way of Tennessee. Has 5 kids, looks like she's had a hard life of marginal employment. Rough and tough, no nonsense. She's seen some shit, as they say. L. is an Asian woman, just turned 19, who is intense and driven. She promotes bands and clubs, and I actually believe it. She has a pierced lip and multiple earrings, but somehow it doesn't look gross. (Body adornment seems to be prevalent among massage therapists and students.) That's all I can remember right now. And like I said, in two weeks I have a whole other group to bond with. One day at a time, I remind myself. Read/Post Comments (1) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
