2007-08-01 7:47 AM Gothic Basin: Hike From Hell, Views of Heaven Previous Entry :: Next Entry Read/Post Comments (0) Here is the link to a killer hike I did last year, Gothic Basin. A smidge over four miles, and at least 2900 feet of elevation gain in the last three of those miles. Bring the ibuprofen and be prepared to spend Day Two just puttering around the Basin itself. (NOTE: this trail is currently inaccessible due to flood damage at the trailhead. Whaaaaaa!)
The above link overstated the difficulty of the trail as far as "scrambling" goes. But otherwise, they are right, it's really hard and really worth it. The entrance is a blessed relief when you finally see it. Getting to Foggy Lake requires a scramble of another ~200 feet of elevation. But you aren't going all that way to ignore the lake! I have skinnydipped this one, and the phrase glacially cold is a gross understatement. Great vistas. Night settles on the basin. Bring your long johns!
