2007-11-26 6:51 PM How I Spent My Winter Vacation Previous Entry :: Next Entry Mood: Content Read/Post Comments (0) Thanksgiving is, for me, cobbled together. I'm one of those "orphans" (though there must be a better descriptor); those folks who, for whatever reason, don't celebrate the holidays with family.
This year, I spent the holiday with three sets of people. First, I hung out with the Cajun and MizHidee, tearing up MizH's rug. It was actually a lot of fun. The womenfolk tore up carpet while the Big Man chain-sawed his way through an 18-inch-thick tree (alder maybe?) in the back yard. A good time was had by all. Later that night, for the holiday meal, I wound up at Casa de Donkee, with Donkee, his mom, his two sisters, his brother in law, and his nephew, along with Shrek and Shrek's mom and sister. Donkee's nephew brought his friend from Vietnam, an exchange student who ate everything with gusto. A lively crew it was. The meal was big, almost too big, but not completely obscene. There was the usual stuff, plus curried squash soup, fresh lumpia (Shrek is Filipino), three kinds of pie and purple yam ice cream. Purple yam ice cream is way better than it sounds. Friday involved going to the downtown tree-lighting fest with Cajun, his kids, and MizH. Lots of people. Rude, pushy people. Nice, tired, cold people. Bad entertainment, all of it poorly lit and poorly amplified. Light the damn tree already. They finally did, and then we went home. Even later, I went to DJ's house to spend the night. Saturday morning we went to Vancouver, where we stayed at the Downtown Hostel. We made sure to have great Greek food, great bellinis, and great dim sum. We took note of places to visit next time, when we had more time. We drank coffee in the Kitsilano Starbucks, drove around West Van, through Stanley Park, over the Lion's Gate Bridge, through North Van, over the Ironworkers' Memorial Bridge, the Queensborough Bridge and finally the Alex Fraser Bridge (my personal favorite, with the LGB coming in a close second). Whee! Today I did little but ply people with my chowder (remember the chowder?) and clean house. I'm settling in with decaf and a good book.
