me in the piazza

I'm a writer, publishing both as SJ Rozan and, with Carlos Dews, as Sam Cabot. (I'm Sam, he's Cabot.) Here you can find links to my almost-daily blog posts, including the Saturday haiku I've been doing for years. BUT the blog itself has moved to my website. If you go on over there you can subscribe and you'll never miss a post. (Miss a post! A scary thought!) Also, I'll be teaching a writing workshop in Italy this summer -- come join us!

Snow in Hokkaido

Okay, maybe it's not Hokkaido, just Greenwich Village, but it sure is snow. Big fat round dots flying slantwise, just like a Hiroshige. It's the kind of weather where when you come in you put your boots on the cat's rubber dinner mat and your gloves in the dish drainer. They say a mix of rain, snow and sleet -- referred to by the news guy on WQXR this morning as "sneet" -- will make a mess tonight, but right now branches, cars, awnings and window sills are piled with cottony blankets. Visibility is about a block. Everyone's walking around grinning, because it's so early in the season no one can believe it and it's not irritating yet. I love it. The dahlias are finally gone, though. Shrivelled black leaves and collapsed stems. (Their stems are wide and hollow, so when they freeze, they break). But they had a hell of a run.
