me in the piazza

I'm a writer, publishing both as SJ Rozan and, with Carlos Dews, as Sam Cabot. (I'm Sam, he's Cabot.) Here you can find links to my almost-daily blog posts, including the Saturday haiku I've been doing for years. BUT the blog itself has moved to my website. If you go on over there you can subscribe and you'll never miss a post. (Miss a post! A scary thought!) Also, I'll be teaching a writing workshop in Italy this summer -- come join us!

Fahrenheit 9/11

Saw the movie. Okay, sure, it's agitprop, but Moore never said it wasn't, never claimed to be making a documentary. The most appalling footage -- the war itself, bodies, blood -- is something we should have been seeing all along. I feel like a broken record, saying this, but if we're going to do something as huge and grave as going to war, we must be sure we understand, and are willing to pay, the costs. I mean, who'd buy a car from someone who said, "Trust me, this is a really good car, you'll be glad you have it, it'll run well, never give you trouble, don't worry about what it costs, we'll just take the money from your account, no problem?" No matter how much you need the thing and how good it is, you still want to know the cost; it's a factor in your decision. When the cost is other people's lives, isn't it even more important to be sure we know it, when we make our decisions?

Okay, so much for that soapbox. I liked the film, though Moore's style of confrontation and embarassment makes me squirm on a personal level. I couldn't do what he does. But I'm WAY glad he's there to do it.
