I'm a writer, publishing both as SJ Rozan and, with Carlos Dews, as Sam Cabot. (I'm Sam, he's Cabot.) Here you can find links to my almost-daily blog posts, including the Saturday haiku I've been doing for years. BUT the blog itself has moved to my website. If you go on over there you can subscribe and you'll never miss a post. (Miss a post! A scary thought!) Also, I'll be teaching a writing workshop in Italy this summer -- come join us! |

2004-11-24 9:48 AM It's about race, II The hunter in Wisconsin who killed six other hunters? He was Hmong (been here since he was 12) and they were white. He was in a deer stand in a tree on private property. They saw him, yelled at him to get down, using "racial epithets." He climbed down, started to walk away, and one of them shot at him. Did he mean to hit him? Who knows? Did they know he'd been trained as a sharpshooter in the CA National Guard? Unlikely. Did others fire back at him after he dropped and shot the man who'd shot at him? Conflicting stories. But the Hmong community in Wisconsin, which includes many hunters, reports numerous race-based incidents involving Hmong and white hunters. The question I'd ask is, would things have ended up anything like this if the guy trespassing in the deer stand had been white?
