me in the piazza

I'm a writer, publishing both as SJ Rozan and, with Carlos Dews, as Sam Cabot. (I'm Sam, he's Cabot.) Here you can find links to my almost-daily blog posts, including the Saturday haiku I've been doing for years. BUT the blog itself has moved to my website. If you go on over there you can subscribe and you'll never miss a post. (Miss a post! A scary thought!) Also, I'll be teaching a writing workshop in Italy this summer -- come join us!

Hotel lobbies

Sylvia liked the visual of me blogging in the Hilton Hotel lobby. This is a trick for which I must credit my middle sister. We three Weird Sisters (and Weird Brother) have had among us very many careers. Before my middle sister was an organic farmer in rural Georgia -- photos to come on the website -- she was a corporate headhunter in NY. One firm she worked for was in Westchester, and she had many client meetings in Manhattan. When you're headhunting, you can't very well go up to the client's office; so she discovered hotel lobbies. They're quiet, clean and warm, reassuringly public, and you can sit in comfy chairs going over files, etc. Or poking at your laptop. Eventually someone will come ask you if you want something, which is a polite way of requesting that you pay rent for the seat. So you order a pot of tea -- or a bourbon, if it's that time of day -- and continue as before. This works in every major city anywhere in the world.
