me in the piazza

I'm a writer, publishing both as SJ Rozan and, with Carlos Dews, as Sam Cabot. (I'm Sam, he's Cabot.) Here you can find links to my almost-daily blog posts, including the Saturday haiku I've been doing for years. BUT the blog itself has moved to my website. If you go on over there you can subscribe and you'll never miss a post. (Miss a post! A scary thought!) Also, I'll be teaching a writing workshop in Italy this summer -- come join us!

Rudy, Bernie, and DOI

So now Bernie's resigned from both of Rudy's firms. It's the least he could do, I guess, but here's the thing: Rudy can't come out of this looking good, any way you slice it. Why not? Because of DOI. I know Warren knows this, and some of the rest of you, but for those who don't: the NYC Department of Investigation, which has among its other jobs the task of vetting mayoral appointees, is a department not of the NYPD but of the Mayor's Office. This means there are only 3 possibilities on this Kerik thing. 1) DOI investigated and found nothing. This level of incompetence in his investigatory agency would make Rudy look pretty bad, but it's the best of the possibilities. The others are: 2) They found a bunch of bad stuff, but Rudy didn't care and appointed the guy anyway. To not just any old commissioner's job, but the 2 top law enforcement jobs in NY. 3) They didn't find any bad stuff because most of it didn't happen until after he'd been appointed. To the 2 top law enforcement jobs in NY. And became a dear close pal of Rudy's. Ah, Rudy, Rudy, Rudy. For all that the guy was a mean, petty and vindictive tyrant from the day he was elected, the one thing no one had ever accused him of was corruption. Now, well, his political future is looking kind of bleaker than it was a few weeks ago. Pride goeth.
