I'm a writer, publishing both as SJ Rozan and, with Carlos Dews, as Sam Cabot. (I'm Sam, he's Cabot.) Here you can find links to my almost-daily blog posts, including the Saturday haiku I've been doing for years. BUT the blog itself has moved to my website. If you go on over there you can subscribe and you'll never miss a post. (Miss a post! A scary thought!) Also, I'll be teaching a writing workshop in Italy this summer -- come join us! |

2005-12-08 12:54 PM Atlantic Center for the Arts I don't know how many of you know about this place: Atlantic Center for the Arts. It's an artists' colony in Florida, where they have three "Master Artists" in residence at a time for a three-week period. Each Master Artist works with 6-8 "Associate Artists." The whole thing is better described below, and on their website. The point is, I'm one of the MA's in 2006, in October. I'm structuring my sessions as an on-going writing workshop, where we'll read work aloud, critique, and do exercises. The ACA also encourages cross-discipline work, and there'll be composers and visual artists in the same residency. I'm not sure how that will play about but I'm excited by the idea. (Ever want to write an opera?) If you're a serious writer in any, or no, genre, and you want to spend a few intense weeks next fall, check it out.
ATLANTIC CENTER FOR THE ARTS 2006 Artists-in-Residence Program OCTOBER 2-22 (application deadline: May 12, 2006) Lee Hyla, composer Guillermo Kuitca, visual artist SJ Rozan, writer "ACA is a wonderful environment. It stirs the stagnant brain and revitalizes one's aims. Participants return to the world with fresh energy and new ideas." William Gass, writer (Master Artist, February 2005) "ACA provides an exciting, unique, and invaluable atmosphere for discussion and reflection among talented artists across many disciplines - blurring their boundaries and reminding us all what our expressive impulses have in common." Jenny Johnson, composer (Associate Artist, May 2005) Since 1982, Atlantic Center's residency program has provided artists from all artistic disciplines with spaces to live, work, and collaborate during three-week residencies. Located just four miles from the east coast beaches of central Florida, the pine and palmetto wooded environment contains award-winning studios that include a resource library, painting studio, sculpture studio, music studio, dance studio, black box theater, writer's studio, and digital computer lab. Each residency session includes three master artists of different disciplines. The master artists each personally select a group of associates - talented, emerging artists - through an application process administered by ACA. During the residency, artists participate in informal sessions with their group, collaborate on projects, and work independently. The relaxed atmosphere and unstructured program provide considerable time for artistic regeneration and creation. Atlantic Center for the Arts provides housing (private room/bath with work desk), weekday meals (provided by ACA chef) and 24 hour access to shared studio space. For more information on how to apply, please telephone (386) 427-6975 or (800) 393-6975 (domestic US only) or visit Atlantic Center for the Arts or email program@atlanticcenterforthearts.org All applications MUST be postmarked by the application deadline date.
