I'm a writer, publishing both as SJ Rozan and, with Carlos Dews, as Sam Cabot. (I'm Sam, he's Cabot.) Here you can find links to my almost-daily blog posts, including the Saturday haiku I've been doing for years. BUT the blog itself has moved to my website. If you go on over there you can subscribe and you'll never miss a post. (Miss a post! A scary thought!) Also, I'll be teaching a writing workshop in Italy this summer -- come join us! |

2007-11-20 9:54 AM Genre, again (1) Loser finds large quantity of cash. Despite obviousness of fact it belongs to bad guys, decides to keep it. Big trouble ensues. Scott Smith, A SIMPLE PLAN. Genre: Crime
(2) Couple of guys set out on cross-country trip after planet-wide cataclysmic event. Big trouble ensues. MAD MAX. Genre: Post-apocalyptic sci-fi. But wait! (1) is NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN, and (2) is THE ROAD, both by Cormac McCarthy! He's not a genre writer! He's a REAL writer. These must be REAL books! Of course they're real books, and terrific ones. Because a REAL writer can take whatever content he/she chooses and make a REAL book out of it. Genre fiction is full of REAL books by REAL writers. And crappy ones, too. And literary fiction is full of the same, including the crappy ones. I know I'm probably preaching to the choir here, but I've been seeing trailers for the film of NO COUNTRY for days now, and I finally had to just say it.
