me in the piazza

I'm a writer, publishing both as SJ Rozan and, with Carlos Dews, as Sam Cabot. (I'm Sam, he's Cabot.) Here you can find links to my almost-daily blog posts, including the Saturday haiku I've been doing for years. BUT the blog itself has moved to my website. If you go on over there you can subscribe and you'll never miss a post. (Miss a post! A scary thought!) Also, I'll be teaching a writing workshop in Italy this summer -- come join us!

Light and Dark

Big light-drama on the river this morning. Left my building under a low charcoal sky. Even, looking out the window, wondered if it was raining, the way it did all day yesterday. At the river, though, found a powerful wind shouldering the heavy sky eastward, and a slit of mother-of-pearl pink and turquoise beginning to glow over the northwest horizon. It grew fast, so bright it lit up the glass on the north side of the Jersey City skyscrapers: some the whole facade, others dots of square windows set in concrete. At the same time the rising sun must have broken through somewhere south of me, because the east windows of buildings downriver suddenly glittered orange. Two different faces of the skyline glowing in different colors, and the river rough and partly in shadow but beginning to glimmer in a broadening band as the wind continued to shove the clouds out of the way. Quite splendid, I must say.
