me in the piazza

I'm a writer, publishing both as SJ Rozan and, with Carlos Dews, as Sam Cabot. (I'm Sam, he's Cabot.) Here you can find links to my almost-daily blog posts, including the Saturday haiku I've been doing for years. BUT the blog itself has moved to my website. If you go on over there you can subscribe and you'll never miss a post. (Miss a post! A scary thought!) Also, I'll be teaching a writing workshop in Italy this summer -- come join us!

Chanukah oh Chanukah...

...Come light the menorah
We'll celebrate this holiday
Though it's not in the Torah.

The above, Tony Kushner, from CAROLINE, OR CHANGE. The below, from my sister, who with her kids (now 11 and 16, but apparently this has been going on for some time) has been annually composing new verses to "Dreidel dreidel dreidel." Here's the original, for those of you not of the tribe:

Dreidel dreidel dreidel
I made it out of clay
And when it's dry and ready
O dreidel I will play!

The youngest of the Four Fabulous Nephews sends this:

Dreidel dreidel dreidel
I made it out of flowers
It’s totally organic
It composts in eight hours

My sister, who shares the family sense of direction:

Dreidel dreidel dreidel
I made it out of cars
With a standard GPS
It spins its way to Mars

Monty Python style, which I can only assume comes from the 16-year-old:

Dreidel dreidel dreidel
I made it out of toast
I spun it on a spot of jam
And served it to my host

And my sister's personal favorite:

Dreidel dreidel dreidel
I made it out of socks
It really doesn’t spin so well
But it likes to take long walks

May the light of the holiday shine in your homes.
