me in the piazza

I'm a writer, publishing both as SJ Rozan and, with Carlos Dews, as Sam Cabot. (I'm Sam, he's Cabot.) Here you can find links to my almost-daily blog posts, including the Saturday haiku I've been doing for years. BUT the blog itself has moved to my website. If you go on over there you can subscribe and you'll never miss a post. (Miss a post! A scary thought!) Also, I'll be teaching a writing workshop in Italy this summer -- come join us!

Rick Warren; or, Charlie Brown and the Effin' Football

Politicians.

They get you every time.

Yes, I know what Obama's trying to do with the Rick Warren thing. Warren's enormously popular, with non-conservative views on a lot of issues. Obama's looking for Warren's support over the next four years in trying to sell some hard decisions to the American people. He'll need it, I agree.

But I've had it, absolutely HAD it, with the idea that -- as opposed to civil rights for blacks, women, disabled people -- civil rights for gays is a concept on which opinions can differ. NO. WRONG. If you can pick and choose who has them, they're not rights. Then they're privileges, granted by whim, vulnerable to being whisked away by another whim.

I'm straight. I have all the rights I need. As a woman and a Jew, though, I'm lucky I was born in the second half of the 20th century or I wouldn't have them. I don't take them for granted (especially after the last 8 years) and I wouldn't be at all happy with the idea that a preacher advocating the idea that women shouldn't be allowed to vote, or Jews to be buried within the city limits -- both at one time the dominant view in this country -- were giving the invocation at the inauguration. In that case, I wouldn't attend, and I wouldn't watch. In this case, I won't, either.
