me in the piazza

I'm a writer, publishing both as SJ Rozan and, with Carlos Dews, as Sam Cabot. (I'm Sam, he's Cabot.) Here you can find links to my almost-daily blog posts, including the Saturday haiku I've been doing for years. BUT the blog itself has moved to my website. If you go on over there you can subscribe and you'll never miss a post. (Miss a post! A scary thought!) Also, I'll be teaching a writing workshop in Italy this summer -- come join us!

Murphy's Law is in effect

Murphy's Law, of course, is the one that declares if anything can go wrong it will, at the worst possible moment. Like, now that I'm on this in-and-out-and-in-and-out booktour, the bathtub wouldn't drain this morning. Months and years of using that bathtub, and when I'm in no position to get it fixed, it breaks. Last time I went on tour the cat got sick right before I needed to leave, I mean like the day before, and there was all sorts of running around to the vet and worrying, etc. We all know about this, it happens to all of you, right? The question is, why? At my mother's house, a major appliance used to break down a day or two before a big holiday when everyone was coming and she was planning to cook. It got so we all just asked what was busted as we walked in. It's beyond random, folks. Is it the spirit world telling me to stay home and not travel? Telling my mother to send us all to my sister's and not cook for a change? Or, are the spirits trying to help me feel happy about being on the road because of all the problems at home? Reminding my mother having the whole family together isn't an unmitigated good thing? I mean, who's in charge here?
