me in the piazza

I'm a writer, publishing both as SJ Rozan and, with Carlos Dews, as Sam Cabot. (I'm Sam, he's Cabot.) Here you can find links to my almost-daily blog posts, including the Saturday haiku I've been doing for years. BUT the blog itself has moved to my website. If you go on over there you can subscribe and you'll never miss a post. (Miss a post! A scary thought!) Also, I'll be teaching a writing workshop in Italy this summer -- come join us!

Winter for sure

Ice all over the river this morning! From the seawall all the way to the ends of the piling fields. NYC's been seriously cold lately, and I was wondering whether the river would freeze. Apparently until last night we've had too much wind. But last night was still and cold and this morning big slushy ice floes washed sluggishly upstream, tinkling when they hit each other and thunking into the pilings. Seagulls took the opportunity to gather and argue. I've seen a pair of mallards in a big hurry flying north every morning for the last week or so, and they zipped by just after I got there today. They must feed up by the Sanitation pier and then camp out somewhere back south again, by Battery Park. I wonder what they did when they got to their diner and found it icebound?
