What I forgot to mention was that by 5 or so some of the shops, including the chocolate shop and the rare book store, were open, and about half the restaurants. And they were doing good business. As a writer, I spend a lot of time in my apartment alone, but those of my fellow New Yorkers who don't apparently get cabin fever after 24 hours. When I went out, everyone else was there, too.
