me in the piazza

I'm a writer, publishing both as SJ Rozan and, with Carlos Dews, as Sam Cabot. (I'm Sam, he's Cabot.) Here you can find links to my almost-daily blog posts, including the Saturday haiku I've been doing for years. BUT the blog itself has moved to my website. If you go on over there you can subscribe and you'll never miss a post. (Miss a post! A scary thought!) Also, I'll be teaching a writing workshop in Italy this summer -- come join us!

Post-Irene Rancho report

Got out here a few hours ago, to find the Rancho more or less intact. The house, completely -- and though the power was out for four days, the milk in the fridge hadn't spoiled. Good thing, too, because I had a helluva headache when I got here and needed caffeine immediately. We lost a big tree on the south, which took down some assorted branches and vines from the trees around it; and all the trees lost a lot of leaves, so the view from the backyard is considerably less lush than it once was. The garden looks bedraggled and beaten but is all there, and the kousa dogwood did very well. That's good because its berries have ripened, and the birds love them. There's a lot of bird noise here this afternoon. I think all the birds are still getting used to the new tree arrangements all over the neighborhood. The butterfly bush took a beating, but the nice thing about a butterfly bush is, you cut it back practically to the ground each year and it comes back fuller and more thrilling.
