me in the piazza

I'm a writer, publishing both as SJ Rozan and, with Carlos Dews, as Sam Cabot. (I'm Sam, he's Cabot.) Here you can find links to my almost-daily blog posts, including the Saturday haiku I've been doing for years. BUT the blog itself has moved to my website. If you go on over there you can subscribe and you'll never miss a post. (Miss a post! A scary thought!) Also, I'll be teaching a writing workshop in Italy this summer -- come join us!

Light and dark

Beautiful, bright, and seriously cold by the river this morning. Tide coming in, already fairly high when I got there. I've mentioned this before, but one of the pleasures of going down to the river at more or less the same time every morning is, I get to see the difference between the lunar and diurnal rhythms. And speaking of diurnal rhythms, I saw a cool film the other night. The City Dark is about how, with our focus on lighting and extending the day, we've really, in urban areas, sort of lost the night. It's not accusatory, or a knee-jerk lament, and it's very beautiful to look at. It'll be on PBS, and also in theatrical release, though since it's a documentary it won't be playing in all that many theaters. If you get a chance, I recommend checking it out. As an aside, it's interesting to me to watch a film, which depends on electric light shining though images, about the effects of electric light.
