me in the piazza

I'm a writer, publishing both as SJ Rozan and, with Carlos Dews, as Sam Cabot. (I'm Sam, he's Cabot.) Here you can find links to my almost-daily blog posts, including the Saturday haiku I've been doing for years. BUT the blog itself has moved to my website. If you go on over there you can subscribe and you'll never miss a post. (Miss a post! A scary thought!) Also, I'll be teaching a writing workshop in Italy this summer -- come join us!

Multi-squirrel morning

Early today, after a long squirrel drought, I saw three in the backyard. One was recognizably Squirrely; I caught him in the middle of breakfast, watched him chow down in all his chubby earnestness. I'm pretty sure one of the others was Squeeze, the one on top of the fence, looking vigilant, displaying her willingness to sit still for long periods (long squirrel period = 90 seconds) and greeting, cheek-to-cheek, a skinnier one who, rather than just charging up the big tree, went up jump by tentative jump, like he was figuring out how to climb it. At the top he leapt onto a neighboring branch and scrambled into the nest. Squeeze followed soon thereafter. So my theory: S&S have done it, producing at least one pup (as I believe they're called) and maybe more. This was an hour after sunrise, so if there are more, they could easily have breakfasted and run back to hide in the nest by then. The good news is, the backyard's all green and leafy with trees, bushes, and vines, so there's plenty of anti-hawk cover and plenty to eat. The bad news is, all these growies make squirrel observation difficult. But, obviously, not impossible.
