I'm a writer, publishing both as SJ Rozan and, with Carlos Dews, as Sam Cabot. (I'm Sam, he's Cabot.) Here you can find links to my almost-daily blog posts, including the Saturday haiku I've been doing for years. BUT the blog itself has moved to my website. If you go on over there you can subscribe and you'll never miss a post. (Miss a post! A scary thought!) Also, I'll be teaching a writing workshop in Italy this summer -- come join us! |

2012-05-30 6:27 PM Memorial Day in the Rancho's town Here for youse are some photos from Memorial Day in Rancho Obsesso's small town. The parade starts at 7:30 am from the firehouse. It's that early for two reasons: one, they have to close the only through road to do it, so starting early keeps traffic from backing up too far; and two, all the local villages' firetrucks are in all the parades, so they need to start early and stagger them. The firefighters and EMS people (all volunteer) march in ranks behind the firetrucks. Then come the regular people. The parade stops at each of the town's war memorials -- Civil War, WWI, WWII, Korea, and Vietnam, plus one for military personnel lost at sea -- and a bugler plays Taps. The firefighters lay a wreath and a prayer is offered by one or another of the local ministers. The parade ends back at the firehouse, where there's a ceremony honoring firefighters for various things (including, this year, a 50-year veteran!) and coffee and doughnuts are served.
