Senators (U. S.) weren't elected by popular vote until the nineteen teens. Instead, they were chosen by the state legislatures. The seventeenth amendment (passed in 1913) provided for direct election by the people of their Senators. (Just as an aside--what was the 16th amendment about?)

So, to do away with the asininity of the Electoral College, a Constitutionl Amendment is needed.

How does one get that to happen?

Get some big names behind the effort. Circulate petitions--get lots of publicity.

Be patient. Amending the Constitution takes (and calls for) time. Only one amendment has ever been repealed--the eighteenth, which was passed in 1919.

Get involved politically. At one point in my life I was quite active in League of Women Voters--a non-partisan organization.

This issue (of direct election of the president) shouldn't get some people's hackles up like the ERA--or Prohibition.

Think about it.

Think about acting on it, even if it's just a letter to your local newspaper.
