Grandparents' Day is an annual thing at the school Anna goes to. Last year she was in kindergarten, and the "event" was held at the church where the school started--and is still the location for 4 and 5 yr. old kindergartens.
Grades one and up (I think 9th is the top grade this year) are on a lovely large campus somewhat outside the older parts of Covington. Anna is in the school choir, so that was an extra reason to be sure to get there. It was a very nice "event" and I was impressed (as usual) by the work the kids do. When we moved to Florida Sherry was in first grade, and we moved mid-year. I was NOT impressed by the public school--and we're talking about an area heavily populated with Space Center families. I did volunteer work in her school library and was not particularly impressed. Students repeating a grade were just moved up to the next higher "group" of the grade they were repeating.Sherry had been in first grade in a semi-rural Louisiana school and was way ahead of her class in February. I saw that there was an Episcopal school in Cocoa (where we lived) and inquired about the possibility of moving Sherry there. My husband had also just gotten a nice raise which, after taxes, would cover the tuition. I talked to the headmistress, she evaluated Sherry, and offered me a contract then and there. When we eventually moved back to Slidell Stacie was starting fifth grade. We ended up putting her in the Catholic school, not so much because of the academics, but because we didn't want her to have to change schools again the next year. (Middle schools began with grade 6.) At any rate, both girls were suffiently impressed by their childhood schools that there was no question in their minds about where to send their children. After the school stuff we went to lunch at a nice little Japanese restaurant that is quite reasonable. Then it was home again--and a "sinking spell" that was quite refreshing. And the weekend is upon us! Football game at home this Sunday--and Stacie and I are going. And next week I'll be getting myself back into a fairly regular work routine.
