2008-12-07 4:00 AM Pundiocy: "No Life" is Sexist? Read/Post Comments (0) |
Per CNN Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell said this about Homeland Security Secretary-designate Janet Napolitano, saying Gov. Napolitano, D-Arizona, as “perfect” for the cabinet position because she has no family, and the position requires a person with “no life.”
People are saying he's being sexist. I don't see that. Many government positions do require a monomaniacal commitment, one that precludes a family, or will severely strain one if the candidate has one. Heck, even my job is like that sometimes. And SpouseKitty has often said that my sort of job requires someone at home to take care of Kitten. Even if she hadn't thrown her back out of whack to the point of being disabled, she wouldn't be able to work, not with my hours. Is it sexist for someone to say that my job requires I have no life, and is better suited for someone without a family? Not at all. And my job isn't nearly as high-exposure as DHS.
