2003-10-12 11:50 PM It's Only Gratuitous If You Get Caught Previous Entry :: Next Entry Read/Post Comments (3) We took a walk over to the Grand Lake theater today and saw Kill Bill. I loved it, and it made me want to work on my Frog novel (which has a fair bit of over-the-top violence itself). Some beautiful shots, wonderful scenes, and most of the action sequences were filmed well (there were only a few of those annoying quick-cuts and close-ups moments that turn what could be impressively stylish violence into MTV-style visual hash). I'm looking forward to the second installment.

The weekend was mildly productive. I got a few stories into the mail, and wrote another few hundred words on the limping-along Rangergirl story. I doubt I'm going to finish it in time to send it to P4. Even if it the first draft does get done, it'll need a fair bit of tightening and revision before I mail it anywhere, since I've been finding my way through the plot by writing it, and there's lots of dead ends and false starts to weed out. So it goes. I think I'd be happier writing the Frog novel now, anyway, so that's what I'm going to concentrate on for a while. I would like to get the draft of that done by the end of the year, which should be doable. I'm not giving up on the Rangergirl story, but I really need to stop stressing out about it, because it's just making me freeze up, and keeping me from accomplishing anything. ***
I'm giving away a few reprints to a couple of new webzines, because I'm a nice guy, and because when editors write to me, and praise my work, and ask me for submissions, I become favorably disposed toward them. I don't have enough unpublished short fiction to go giving it away, though, so it's gotta be reprints. So people will soon be able to read "Straight Trade" and "Angel of the Ordinary" and maybe another story or two that aren't in the collection, and can't be found elsewhere online, so that's nice, and if it brings me another reader or two, so much the better, right? Details to follow when the stories actually appear. ***
Saturday night we went to the home of the lovely Susan Marie (and the equally lovely Matt, now) for a cook-out and lots of video game playing. Very fun. Much Soul Caliber 2. We hung out for hours, talking and enjoying (the theme of this entry?) over-the-top violence. There's nothing else quite like smashing your enemy to the ground with a sword the size of tree. I showed her my collection (still no hardcover contributor copies, but I got the trade paperback, which is being send out as review copies), which mentions her twice, in the acknowledgments and in the story notes for "The Scent of Copper Pennies" (which she once memorably described as a "quantum physics voodoo love story" -- I still think Quantum Physics Voodoo Love Stories would make a good name for a collection). ***
Caitlín Kiernan posted my review of Low Red Moon on her website, so if you don't read A Certain Magazine and want to know what my reviews are like, here's your chance. She seemed pleased with the review -- she thinks I got what she was trying to do -- which is quite gratifying. Similarly, Nick posted my review of 3000 MPH, thus smashing my bourgeois intellectual property rights, which is okay, since I don't care if people reprint my reviews, unless they make money off them, which would be pretty tricky, I imagine -- if you figure out a way to make money off reprinting my reviews, lord, please tell me! ***
We got our contrib copies of Intracities, and it's a very nicely made 'zine. Props to Mike! I'm looking forward to reading the stories. Already read Claude Lalumičre's, which rather charmed me by the end, despite possessing a glib meta-fictional quality that often irritates me in stories. ***
Did you guys ever see the kick-ass illustration for my story "Fable from a Cage"? Artist Lori Koefoed put it up on her website here. She's a hell of an artist. ***
There. A whole weekend's worth of random bits of flotsam. Hope it helped your Monday morning dawn brightly and beautifully. Read/Post Comments (3) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
