Happy Cinco de Mayo! (Or, as the day is called in my unfinished sequel story to "Dream Engine," happy five by five day! In that story, the fifth day of the fifth month is an unlikely nexus of various holidays -- from debauched festivals to somber holiness to a sacrifical day for a fun-lovin' death cult -- in the ultimate multi-dimensional immigrant city.) I suspect I'll drink some tequila tonight. I mean, it seems likely.

My old friend A. came through town yesterday and crashed at our place. Heather and I escorted her from downtown Oakland to our house, introduced her to Holly and our nephew, then took her over to Montclair for some dinner. Mmm, fish and chips. Then back home to talk talk talk until sleepytime descended. As I'd hoped, it was as if the eight years since I saw her last never happened, as if we were picking up the same conversation (about art, life, etc.) we'd left off back in the late '90s. She even looks the same. (I don't, being about 40 pounds heavier, having short hair, etc. Ah, well.) I was sad to say goodbye this morning -- she's heading to a summer job up north -- but it looks like she'll be in California for a while, so I should see her again.

Glad the weekend is nearly upon us. Today, I go to work. Tonight, I'll probably work on Flytrap, possibly with the involvement of tequila. Life is pretty good.
