2003-09-15 10:01 PM Sports on Monday Week 3 Previous Entry :: Next Entry Read/Post Comments (1) Sports on Monday (Week 3) has some good news and bad news. Let's start with the bad news. The WUSA had to shut down today, citing a lack of corporate sponsorship and declining attendance. My family and I are constantly debating women's professional sports and whether they are a viable enterprise. I think it's ridiculous that the country with the highest percentage of women playing sports has such problems supporting women's sports -- even an 8 team professional soccer league that considers 8,000 fans a game reasonably successful. I also think trying to market women's sports as exactly like the men's game but with girls is a huge mistake and one of the reasons the WNBA is having such a hard time. I won't even get into the problems of having networks like Fox covering sports as if it was some sort of good ol' boys club where the only women admitted are in skimpy clothing. (If the women want to wear skimpy clothing that's their business, so I want no comments blasting me for being a cheerleader hater, OK?) OK now the good news. Susan and I went to the Yankees game on Saturday. It was a lot of fun. I am not a Yankee fan in the slightest, but I do love going to baseball games. And since this time they were playing Tampa Bay and not my Cardinals, I admit to kinda rooting them on. Susan -- a true Yankee hater, dating back from the late 90s when they swept her Rangers out of the playoffs every year -- enjoyed watching her old fave Ruben Sierra make several nice catches in the outfield AND hit the game winning home run. Plus Bernie Williams, one of the Yankees I do like, hit two home runs on his birthday. And the bleacher rowdies were in rare form, considering it was in the 60s and raining off and on again. I particularly got a kick out of a group of guys in front of us who got mad when some OTHER Yankee fans started yelling (stupidly) to pull Weaver in the 1st inning. Alright, enough good news and bad news -- the scores! Well, I'm not going to comment a whole lot on the scores, which somewhat speak for themselves. I think OSU and OU got their offenses working, although they should have, given the quality of their opponents. Hee, hee Longhorns got beat at home! I'm not even talking about the other two sports; it's too depressing. Until next week, Sports on Monday signs off.
