Anyway, graduation was fun, certainly not your typical graduation. (The speeches included an undergrad speaking of the difficulties of being a poor student at SLC and an address from antiwar activist/writer Grace Paley.) I've never been to a graduation before where they didn't even try to tell people not to cheer after each person's name. The reception afterward felt like some sort of high society garden party -- tasteful jazz combo, gourmet dessert appetizers, and lots of tables with white umbrellas. We didn't stay that long, just long enough to find Lucy and Mary and enough of my fellow grad students to convince my parents I actually know people up here. The rest of the weekend was fun too. I don't get to have my parents to myself very often. We did a lot of tourist stuff (word of advice - if you want to see the Empire State Building, go on a Sunday at about 2 pm), and I think they had fun. We didn't really talk about the car much. Now I have to deal with the neverending process that is Shazia moving out. I found out yesterday that not only is she probably not moving out next weekend like we were told, she hasn't even had her interview with the co-op board, which means she could still be turned down for the apartment. I can't figure out if she's really so clueless as to think when they made an offer they'd be able to move right in (even I know about co-op boards) or if she's done this on purpose so she could save money. After all, if we split the rent four ways we save more than $100 each, and because we already have a third girl she doesn't have to give us 30 days notice when they finally do move out, so she doesn't get stuck paying us an extra month. I'm leaning toward clueless: she'd really have to be devious to set it up on purpose and then talk to us the way she did last night, like she was just frustrated and exhausted by how long the process was taking. She's not stupid, but the girl has less common sense than anyone I've ever met. And I have no idea how I'm going to break it to Anne that the "temporary" week of crowding and lack of her promised study could stretch out to a month or two. This is going to suck royally.
