I'm not hating the Counting Crows single that I'm sure will be overplayed all summer -- it has that same bouncy cheese element that gets in your head, just like Smashmouth's "All-Star" from the original movie. But wait until you hear the creepy Tom Waits song "A Little Drop of Poison." Also liking Rachel Yamagata (not totally sure of the spelling, I'll get back to you), who has a new album coming out, although I think "Wore Me Down," one of my current obsessions, is from an EP that came out in December. Nellie McKay is also good, if you can stand a few obscenities here and there (far less than your average rap album, but enough that even WFUV has to shy away from some of the more interesting tracks) and nineteen year old liberalism. Safe bet she will never make popular radio, but I actually bought her CD ("Get Away From Me") at the Barnes & Noble on 71st in Tulsa, so she's available if you know where to look. (As I'm typing this, "David" the first track on the album is playing on the radio. Coincedence? Or am I just attuned to the universe? Don't answer that.) I'm trying to track down the lyrics to Jamie Cullum's "Twenty-something" which I heard yesterday for the first time. Unfortunately, WFUV prefers to play two other tracks, "All At Sea" (it plays under the TV commercial for the album, if you've seen it) and a cover of "I Get A Kick Out of You." But the song basically boils down to "I'm twenty-something and I don't know what I want to do with my life, so leave me alone already." Which is exactly how I feel lately. It's quitting time! (Don't tell, besides I spent four and a half hours stuffing envelopes today, so I earned a little easy time.) Off to the car, and more WFUV!
