The Emergency Hat, and other Cold related stories

This is how good the heat is in my new apartment: I didn't even notice the radiator in the living room wasn't turned on until yesterday, when the temperature failed to reach 20 and the windchills were below zero all day. Until then I was getting enough heat from the pipes in my kitchen and the kitchen next door radiating through the wall that I just assumed it was on. It has now been fixed, and it is quite toasty in the entire apartment. Too bad there's no such quick fix for the office.

I had to pause knitting Radio Brother's socks in order to whip up a quick hat for myself this weekend, after it occurred to me that the reason my other hats were not keeping my head sufficiently warm was that none of my other hats had been knit in real wool. Luckily I happened to have quite a bit of leftover green wool from the sweater I just finished as well as some white alpaca from the sweater I did last year, and my latest knitting magazine had a cool Scandinavian inspired two color hat. Normally when I take up a knitting project, even a quick one, I'm not trying to meet a deadline (or, if I am, I start working on it months in advance) but as the weather forecasts for Monday got increasingly dire, finishing the hat before then became more and more urgent -- I even stayed up late on Sunday night to get it finished. (I would just like to add a side note that it's even more impressive that I finished the hat since I went to the Maths Wizard and Hostess's Super Bowl Party and did not, as I have in past years, devote any game time to handicrafts.) Thus, my new green and white hat (my new goal is to wear it to a Jets game someday), is now known as my Emergency Hat. I actually ended up having to go back last night and add in a second hat band, because the original brim doesn't fit tight enough to keep a strong wind out, but I now have a good, warm hat for the rest of this very cold week, and can return to my regularly scheduled knitting.

Also, can I again lament that we have had no snow to accompany this cold snap? I have to wear my waterproof shoes just to keep my feet warm, I might as well get to walk through snow while I'm at it.
