2007-03-19 2:30 PM Please Post Conspicuously Previous Entry :: Next Entry Read/Post Comments (0) The post title is kind of random today -- it's what's printed at the bottom of the fire procedure sheet by the elevators at work -- but this is going to be a rather random, grab-bag kind of a post, so I suppose it works. Though, judging by the latest sitemeter stats, it will be anything but conspicuous.
Personal segment: Thanks to everyone who called/e-mailed/sent cards last week for the birthday. Two of my mother's sisters sent me the exact same card -- and it's not the first time they've done that. Also, my mother sent me a box of Girl Scout cookies (Samoas) which I managed to make last until yesterday. Anyway, it was nice to draw on my little stash of well-wishes when I had a massive attack of lonesome blues last night. I'm not sure if it was the birthday thing, or Spring Fever (we had a heavy sleet storm all day Friday that pretty much obliterated any sense of impending spring), or just the fact that I had a sink full of dirty dishes that needed to be washed before I went to bed, but it was not particularly fun and kind of hit out of nowhere. Good thing you all spent all week telling me how much you cared. Pop Culture commentary segment: The Mirror Has Two Faces (the Barbra Streisand/Jeff Bridges movie that came out when I was in high school) has not aged well visually. It seems to have hit that weird line in the 90s right before the fashions changed PLUS the internet/electronics upswing so the whole movie feels like it's a contemporary of The Way We Were instead of Jerry Maguire. It's a cute movie on the whole, and the story still works, but there's all these funny little anachronisms that really seemed to stick out more than in a truly old movie. Also, the big song at the end was a duet between Bryan Adams and Streisand (duh) which I had completely forgotten about. Remember when Bryan Adams was relevant? Entertainment News segment: Josh Radnor (Ted on How I Met Your Mother) is TV Guide's latest celebrity blogger, which, since I adore that show, is great news for me. He spends his maiden entry talking about his allergy to dogs (funny because his character on the show is dating a woman with five of them) and talking about how awesome Friday Night Lights is, which I'm guessing his bosses at CBS won't be too excited about, but certainly increases my respect for his taste. J1 and I spent some time at Zan and BA's party on Saturday talking the show up to the other guests. I was pleased to find that J1 liked the show, since even though he's from Texas he's not much of a sports person, which I guess proves my contention that you do not have to understand/like football to enjoy this show. (Actually, sometimes it helps not to know much about football, since occasionally the writers use a bit too much creative license when crafting game situations. This and writing realistically intelligent small children -- as opposed to annoyingly precocious -- seem to be the only areas where the writers can't quite hit the nail on the head. I think it's only noticeable because the rest of the show is so perfect.) Anyway, I would like to take this opportunity to advocate the watching of both shows, HIMYM on Mondays at 8et/7ct on CBS and Friday Night Lights on Wednesdays at 8et/7ct on NBC. (If you go to church on Wednesdays, tape it. You will not be sorry.) Sports Segment: Stupid Texas. Still, at least I did not have them getting to the Final Four like many other people. I did have one bracket with Wisconsin in the Final Four, though. Not because I liked Wisconsin, but because I figured my usual anti-Big 10 bias was causing me to underestimate them. Turns out I should have listened to my gut. Still, there were just as many upsets in the women's first round as in the men's (and almost the same ones, too: two 9s over 8s, and 1 11 over 6 in both, with the men having one extra 11 over 6 and the women having the big 13 over 4 shocker) which almost never happens. It will be interesting to see if the top seeds continue to prevail or if the closer seedings start to result in more upsets next weekend. In the meantime, go Sooners! Beat Marquette!
